March ON Washington DC

The March ON Washington September 12, 2009

Those attending the march on DC were concerned about the direction our government is going. Primarily they feel, evidenced by massive increases in deficit spending, that Congress is out of control. This trend toward the growth of government they feel, threatens our liberty and freedom.  They want to reverse this trend and reduce the size of government.

People in attendance came from all parts of the country. They were from all ethnic backgrounds and age groups. People brought their young children. A diverse group of occupations were represented including doctors, truck drivers, coal miners and engineers.

My estimate for the attendance was in the hundreds of thousands.  The Capitol grounds were filled including both left and right sides. The crowd extended out to the Washington monument mall and occupied about one third of the mall. Some reports had the crowd as high as 2 million. Taking the marches around the entire country I believe it is safe to claim multiple millions.

People were polite and courteous. They were determined to make a statement to Congress reminding them that the Capitol is the people’s house and that they better listen to the American people. They were extremely serious about sending a message that they want limited government and that Congress abides by the Constitution. They are very concerned about government corruption. I have heard the media mention often that there was a racist undertone in the motives of the crowd. That is false. People were concerned about an out of control government and a move toward socialism. Race played no part.

Dominant issues they voiced were weeding out corruption,  stop illegal immigration and control the borders, preserve and respect America’s Judeo/Christian heritage, opposition to government run healthcare and the cap and trade bill, no bail outs and government interference in private companies.

The people were patriotic Americans who love liberty and freedom and personal responsibility and want to aggressively protect our Constitutional rights. As an African American speaker said “I don’t need change I already have freedom”. They are determined to return this country back to its Constitutional roots as envisioned by the founders. This was a very determined group of main stream Americans who have a stake in America. I think the Congress better analyze the meaning of this historic march and begin to make some serious changes on how they will govern going forward. Patriotic Americans are engaged and they will be watching.
